David Powell, who spent several years working as a woodcutter in Torbreck Forest in the Scottish Highlands, is a revolutionary of the Australian wine industry.
Saddened by the government-sponsored ‘Vine Pull’, but also convinced a market existed for old vine Rhône styles, David set about approaching local landowners concerning their neglected vineyards. Nearly lifeless and overgrown, he nurtured these old vines back to health and was rewarded with a few small parcels of dry grown fruit, which he has turned into truly remarkable wines.
“David Powell, unquestionably one of the world’s finest wine producers, has an uncanny ability to discover old Barossa Vineyards, and then secure long term contracts for their fruit…Torbreck’s wines continue to get better and better, combining the old ripe fruit of the Barossa with a European sensibility to elegance and balance. The finest wines in this portfolio are pricy, but David Powell delivers some remarkable reds and whites at prices that are more than fair, for the quality in the bottle.”
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, Issue 161, November 2005
