Charles Carichon does not use any kind of weed-killer or chemical fertiliser in his vineyards. Only organic compost and manure, and the ashes from his own vine cuttings, are used as fertiliser. When work in the vineyard is required, he takes care to consult the lunar calendar, following the biodynamic methods developed by Rudolf Steiner, so as to preserve the vine as much as possible. 'Total respect for the land and the vine' is Charles's policy.
The village of Sarrians is a typical Provençal one and enjoys an excellent location, situated as it is between Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise. The estate commands an unbelievable view over the “Dentelles de Montmirail” mountain range. The Domaine has all the hallmarks of the beauty of life in Provence: vineyards, olive trees, cypresses, parasol pines, broom and lavender plants.
In the cellar, air-conditioning and careful hygiene permit the use of a very low level of sulphur. Red wines are aged for six months in oak barrels.
The name of the Domaine is derived from the Brunelli family, Lords of Chaux. In 1420 Pelegrin de Brunelli fought to defend Pope Martin V against the partisans of Benedict XIII, known as the 'anti-Pope'. To thank him, the Pope named Pelegrin de Brunelli 'Prior-Prosecutor and Commander of the Land of Sarrians.' The Brunellis first settled at the spot now known as Le Domaine de la Brunely, where they remained until 1739. The Carichon family, who had been wine growers in the area since 1730, purchased the estate in 1976.
