In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester & Nash in London, a cereal trading company. In 1750 they moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and began making and shipping Port. Henry’s sons Fredrick and Edward continued the business, whilst also founding what would later become the NatWest bank. History has recently come full circle with Burmester being bought by investment banking group Sogevinus.
The Burmester style is fruit-dominated and well-suited to modern tastes. The Port House’s particular strength is its single-harvest, wood-matured Colheitas - essentially Tawny Vintage Port.
