The Trapiche Malbec Single Vineyard project aims to display the extraordinary potential of Argentina's terroirs, and the country's winegrowers and their effect on Malbec, Argentina's flagship grape variety. Each year (2005 is the third year) Trapiche's Chief Winemaker Daniel Pi and his team select three individual vineyards and vinify their grapes separately. The resulting wines are a true expression of the 'richness of diversity' which is key to all of Trapiche's endeavours.
In 2005 the three vineyards are:
VIÑA ELEODORO ACIAR Eleodoro Aciar has devoted 30 years to his vineyard in Perdriel, Luján de Coyo, where the first Malbec vines were planted. . This vineyard is at 920 meters altitude and one of its key features is its great age - 95 years. The vines are on their own rootstock. A fine balance has been reached between the climate, the soil and the cultivation which results in sweet, delicate fruit.
VIÑA FRANCISO OLIVE Francisco Olivé is 88 and has worked on this land since he was a boy. The vineyard is at Agrelo, Luján de Coyo. The vines here are nearly 70 years old and are ungrafted. At 1,050 meters altitude this is the highest of the three Single Vineyards. The grapes here achieve an exceptional colour.
VIÑA FAUSTO ORELLANO is in the southern Uco Valley in La Consulta, a cool area at 990 meters altitude. Fausto Orellano came from Bolivia over 25 years ago and fell in love with this beautiful place in the sight of the Andes. The vines here are a relatively (in this context) young 57 years of age, and on their own rootstocks. Wine of great balance and concentration results from the particualr combination of climate, soil and vine age.
The grapes from all three vineyards were vinified and bottled separately at the Trapiche winery. After hand-harvesting they were fermented in small concrete vats, and the wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. A little over 14,000 bottles of each were produced.
