Welcome to HBJ's Newsletter Fifth Issue

Spring is almost over and we hope for sunny summer days, which make us all feel better and encourage everyone to get out and enjoy themselves - which in turn helps all of our businesses.

HBJ has been busy since the last issue of the Newsletter, with a successful annual tasting event held at the Galleria in Pall Mall. The ideal situation of this venue in the heart of the West End encouraged a fine turnout, and we had an excellent response to our new way of presenting of our wines.

The Galleria is part of New Zealand House and the High Commissioner,  Mr Derek Leaske, was kind enough to look in - and no doubt sampled some Vavasour Wines, our new NZ Agency.

Our 2008 Wine and Spirits Price list was published on the same day - if by some chance you haven't had a copy please do ask (sales@hbjwines.co.uk) and we'll send you one. We are particularly pleased by the new design, inspired by 1920's and 1930's travel and drink posters.

HBJ participated in the London International Wine Fair at Excel - and our associated company Hayman Distillers exhibited at the first ever Distil - a new fair devoted to spirits running in parallel to the LIWF. We were very happy to see many new and old friends at both.

Please do let us know what you think of the HBJ Newsletter or any of its content. I hope you have a pleasant and profitable summer!

Champagne PANNIER has gone all sporty this summer!

Pannier Brut Sélection will be served en Jéroboam - and magnums, bottles, luxury cuvées - at Royal Ascot (Tuesday 17-Saturday 21 June). A surefire winner! No other Champagne is available at Ascot in this size, the equivalent of four bottles. Pannier will be served from the Brigadier Gerard Bar.

If you miss Pannier at Ascot, you can still enjoy it at The Oval this summer at the Pannier tent.

And PANNIER BRUT SELECTION NV was awarded Gold, Best in Class at the 2008 International Wine Challenge. (see below)

Domaine de la Brunély , a long-time favourite of ours, continues on our list - did you know that this estate cultivates its vines according to biodynamic principles?

Fund raising ...

...for Regain

Our very own Martin Allen put in a special effort on Saturday 15 June as he and three team mates raised money for our charity Regain - you can think of him if you like cycling 40 miles in the Welsh mountains, climbing up and down Mount Snowdon and paddling a canoe round Lake Padarn. And congratulations to the team on improving their 2005 time round the same course.

You can still sponsor Martin at http://www.justgiving.com/martinallen1

... for Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Just as worthy, if a little less strenuous .... Elizabeth Wilson, our Buying Director, raised over £1300 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer - completing a walking Marathon, taking in a route around Richmond Park before heading up the north Thames path and back over Putney Bridge. 'Of course I also did that extra mile and a half at least when I went the wrong way. It took 8.25 hours including the extra distance' comments Elizabeth www.pinkpowerwalk.org.uk
